科研兴趣:

我的研究重点是节肢动物和环境的相互作用,以及人类活动和环境变化如何影响两者间的相互关系。我最早从事沿海栖息地和大陆架的大型底栖动物种群生态学研究。这些研究工作的设计和布局通常是我们对环境的观察、推测和预期变化,如富营养化、污染和自然资源的过渡采伐,所作出的反应。例如上世纪90年代初大西洋鳕鱼种群衰退之后所开展的纽芬兰大浅滩拖网捕鱼实验,我们明确了不同类型钓鱼用具对沉淀性物质和底栖食物网的影响。多数情况下,很多优先资助的项目是为了解决那些导致巨大社会和经济影响的环境问题。从上世纪90年代开始,我的研究兴趣越来越多的转向象甲研究,因为这是一个极为丰富多彩的甲虫类群而且它还具有非常大的经济重要性。我对其中一个亚科具有强烈的好奇心。这个亚科包含的种类繁多而且生物学特性极为复杂。这个类群具有高度适应环境的生活史策略,我们只能通过一些偶然采集的标本,来认识其中的一些种类。比较生态多样性和形态一致性间差别,为我们解决分类学问题提供了富有成效的新方法。非常幸运的是,我在拉丁美洲进行了广泛的实地调查,这项工作让我感到象甲类群种类丰富五彩斑斓。在植物学专家的帮助下,我开始系统研究甲虫和植物的协同关系和生活史策略。在美国农业部工作期间,我的研究重点转为入侵性象甲和重要农业象甲。我一直希望能够在十分钟内鉴定出世界上任何一个地方的象甲。目前的努力就是为解决这个问题提供必要的知识和工具。
